Lawyers and law firms must have a powerful internet presence today to remain competitive in a world of many lawyers.  Websites for lawyers were rare twenty years ago.  With few execptions, only large law firms had websites.  Clients did not expect lawyers to have websites.  High speed broadband internet access was expensive and rare.  The yellow pages and television advertising were the primary media to reach prospective clients.

Clients Expect To Find Websites For Lawyers On The Internet

Today’s client likely has internet access at home.  It is probably high speed internet access. Most prospective clients turn to the internet first when looking for a lawyer.  They expect to be able to find “reputable” lawyers on the internet.

It used to be that merely having a law practice website implied credibility.  Not anymore. Today’s client starts his research on the internet to find a lawyer.  Good websites bring in new clients.

The Internet Is Steadily Replacing The Yellow Pages

It used to be that the vast majority of prospective clients turned to the yellow pages first when looking for a lawyer.  Those clients could instantly obtain insight in to the size and/or success of the lawyer by looking at the yellow page listing.  Was it a full-page ad? Half-page ad? Maybe just a text listing?  Clients knew without having to research it that a full-page listing in the yellow pages was expensive.  A large ad usually meant a successful practice.

Today, yellow page directory usage is decreasing each year. At the same time, internet usage for locating professional services is increasing each year.  Only about 50% of consumers use the yellow pages even once per month.  On the other hand, more than 50% of internet users perform an online search at least once each week.

It won’t be much longer until printed yellow page directories are completely obsolete. Consumers know printed directories are updated yearly while online data can be updated several times a day.  They want the most current information, and that information is found online.

Types Of Websites For Lawyers

The traditional website for lawyers was a “static” website with several pages about the law firm and the attorneys who practice there.  Those sites are essentially just a digital business card.  They have information about the lawyers, but they have no useful information for the client.

On the other hand, blog websites for lawyers have the same information as the traditional sites plus they contain pages and pages of helpful information for the client looking for legal help.  Blog websites are the first choice for lawyers who want to be found on the internet. The fact is, Google and the other search engines love blogs websites.  Attorney blogs attract internet traffic.

What Is A Blog Website?

A blog is short for “web log.”  But that really doesn’t help, does it?  A blog is merely a website that is designed to allow you to easily publish new information in the form of articles (or “posts”).  Think of it almost as your own online magazine about legal issues.

Do I Have To Write Long Articles In Order To Blog?

Absolutely not.  It is actually better if you don’t publish long articles (at least no very often); The point of publishing articles is to provide helpful content to your readers.  They don’t want to read long legal articles.  They want you to get to the point.  Answer a question. Give a tip.  Shorter articles are more likely to be read.  A blog articles of 250 – 400 words is ideal.

Is It Difficult To Publish Articles On A Blog?

Absolutely not.  Blogs are incredibly simple. You don’t need any technical knowledge after the blog website is built.  You only need to be able to type and click “Publish.” It’s unbelievably simple.  Anyone can do it.
